Current Affairs of May 12, 2018, are as follows:-

1. Book Release By Chief Of Army Staff:-

  • General Bipin Rawat, Chief of Army the Staff released the book 'Across the Bench - Insight into the Indian Military Judicial System' by Lt Gen Gyan Bhushan, former Army Commander, and Member 'A', Armed Forces Tribunal, Lucknow Bench.
  • The book deals with military judicial system vis-a-vis command and management issues within the military establishments besides the whole gamut of issues relating to veterans, their families, and dependents.

2. India Pavilion Inaugurated at Cannes Film Festival 2018:-

  •  The inaugural session of the Indian Pavilion at the Cannes Film Festival 2018 was held at Cannes, France. It was hosted by noted actor Sharad Kelkar.
  • A meeting between the Indian delegation and Ms. Isabelle Giordano, Director General, Unifrance, M. Loic Wong, Director of International Department, CNC, France was held to explore co-production opportunities between India and France.

3. SpaceX Launches Most Powerful Falcon 9 Rocket:-

  • The California-based aerospace company, SpaceX has blasted off its most powerful Falcon 9 rocket, which is certified to carry humans to space later this year.
  • The Block 5 Falcon 9 rocket’s main goal for its maiden mission is to propel the first high-orbit communications satellite for Bangladesh, called Bangabandhu Satellite-1.
  • The Block 5 Falcon 9 is eventually meant to carry astronauts to the International Space Station, with the first launch tentatively planned for December 2018.

4. Rafael Nadal sets record of winning 50 consecutive sets on a single surface:-

  • Rafael Nadal broke John McEnroe’s 34-year record by winning his 50th consecutive set on clay at the Madrid Open.
  • Nadal’s straight-sets victory means he establishes a new Open era best for consecutive sets won on a single surface, passing McEnroe’s 49 on the carpet in 1984.

5. World's second oldest rock discovered in Odisha:-

  • Scientists have discovered world's second oldest grain of magnetic zircon ( a mineral that contains traces of radioactive isotopes ) from champuna from Singhbhum rock sample in Odisha's Kendujhar district.
  • It is an estimated 4, 240 million years old, making it world's second oldest rock ever to be discovered. It is oldest magnetic zircon on earth.

7. Donald Trump cuts funding to NASA system that monitors greenhouse gases:- 

  •  US President Donald Trump’s administration has cut off the funding for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Carbon Monitoring System (CMS). The move comes at a time when the world is struggling to combat climate change.
  • According to Science Magazine, the United States has repeatedly proposed cuts to NASA's earth science budget, including NASA's Carbon Monitoring System (CMS). The NASA system monitors the flow of greenhouse gases.
  • The system had till now used satellite and aircraft instruments to monitor carbon dioxide and methane levels remotely, spending $10m each year.

8. Flipkart co-founder Sachin Bansal quits after Walmart Deal:-

  • Flipkart co-founder Sachin Bansal announced his exit from the company on May 12, 2018, hours after the news of American retailer Walmart acquiring Flipkart broke in the nation.
  • Bansal stated in a post on social media that it was time for him to hand over the baton and move on. Bansal’s decision comes after Walmart’s condition that it could accommodate only one of the Flipkart founders in the board.
  • Binny Bansal, on the other hand, will retain his 5.5 percent stake in the company and remain Flipkart Group CEO. Kalyan Krishnamurthy will also continue as CEO of Flipkart.com.

9. Prof Muhammad Yunus Conferred KISS Humanitarian Award 2018:-

  • Nobel laureate and noted economist Muhammad Yunus was honored with the 11th KISS Humanitarian Award 2018 at a function held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Yunus is the founder of Grameen Bank and is known as the Father of Microfinance.

10. Panel to look into black money recovery:-

  • A parliamentary panel headed by Murali Manohar Joshi will study the recovery of black money & performance of public sector banks. 30-member Estimates Committee has decided to study a host of subjects related to various ministries in the year 2018-19.

11. Indian Tea Industry Records Highest Ever Production, Export In FY18:-

  • Indian tea industry recorded the highest ever production as well as exports in FY18.The total tea production was 1325.05 million kgs, an increase of 74.56 million kgs as compared to 2016-17.
  • In percentage terms, the increase is around 6%. Similarly, the total quantity of tea exported during the financial year 2017-18 stood at 256.57 million kgs, while the foreign exchange realized from exports of Indian tea was $ 785.92 million.
  • The number of tea exports increased by 12.71% to 28.94 million kgs during 2017-18.

12. Bharat Biotech receives National Technology Award for Rotavac:-

  • Leading vaccine maker Bharat Biotech received the National Technology Award for 2018 from the Central government’s Technology Development Board for its Rotavac vaccine.
